1 Language Learning in Scotland: A 1+2 Approach BSL in Schools Conference Tuesday 2 nd February

2 An additional language from P1 (L2) L1 is the mother tongue L2 is sometimes English First and second level Experiences and Outcomes Working towards full implementation in 2020 Languages 1+2

3 A second additional language by P5 at the latest (L3) Flexible approach: inserts, masterclasses, IDL etc Good practice is still emerging Languages 1+2

4 Regular, planned exposure to the language Develop links between language learning and employability and citizenship Development of language study supported by greater use of ICT Value of learning languages Languages 1+2

6 Transition Absolutely key to the successful implementation of the policy Primary and Secondary schools should work together on content, skills and approaches to learning to ensure effective transition Ideally the secondary will have opportunities for further study of the same L3

7 Transition and L3 Challenges Agreement and cooperation needed from all the cluster schools Should be ensuring depth in language skills

8 L3 in the Secondary Does not have to be the same as L3 in the primary Does not have to be studied in the same depth as L2 Should offer a progressive experience that goes beyond word level

9 L3 in the Secondary Flexible opportunities to study more than one language to the level of a National Qualification in the Senior Phase LLWA In addition to L2

10 Inclusion Language learning is an entitlement of all pupils till the end of the BGE (S3) Schools should not assume that young people with ASN are not required to study a language

11 Challenges There is still no clear model that works for everyone Teacher provision Attitudes to languages Finding time in the curriculum

12 Benefits Better communicators Deeper knowledge of their own and other languages Increased uptake of languages Citizenship and values
