1 Section 9-3 Define seismologists, seismograph, and magnitude. Describe how the Richter scale measures an earthquake. What causes a tsunami to occur? Define seismologists, seismograph, and magnitude. Describe how the Richter scale measures an earthquake. What causes a tsunami to occur?

2 Seismologists – scientists who study earthquakes and seismic waves Seismograph – the instrument used to record primary, secondary, and surface waves Magnitude – a measure of the energy released during an earthquake; is shown by the height of the lines traced by the seismograph Seismologists – scientists who study earthquakes and seismic waves Seismograph – the instrument used to record primary, secondary, and surface waves Magnitude – a measure of the energy released during an earthquake; is shown by the height of the lines traced by the seismograph

3 Richter Scale Describes how much energy is released by an earthquake. For each increase of 1.0, the amplitude of the largest surface waves is 10 times greater and about 32 times as much energy is released. Describes how much energy is released by an earthquake. 5 Tsunamis Occurs when an earthquake under the sea causes abrupt movement of the ocean floor. The ocean waves generated are called seismic sea waves, or tsunamis. After reaching the Earth’s surface, the waves can travel thousands of kilometers in all directions and can reach 30 meters high. 6 Earthquake Safety If you live in an area where earthquakes have happened in the past, it is important to quake-proof your home.quake-proof If you live in an area where earthquakes have happened in the past, it is important to quake-proof your home.quake-proof
