Objectives of the course By the end of the course, you should be able to: – Know the definition of a monomial – Know the definition of like monomials – Add or subtract like monomials – Multiply monomials together
3
Monomials - Definition A is an expression like: Where: 1. 2. 3. 4. monomial a is called the coefficient xn xn is called the term x is called the variable or the unknown n is called the degree of the monomial coefficient term variable or unknown degree
4
EXAMPLES OF APPLICATION
5
Determine the correct components MonomialCoefficientTermVariableDegree
6
Like monomials Like monomials are monomials having the same : – same – and same Like monomials terms variable degree
7
Add and Subtract like monomials Only like monomials can be added or subtracted together. To add or subtract (also called reducing): – the variable first – Then add or subtract the coefficients like monomials Factor add subtract reducing
8
Practical exercises
9
Reduce and order* Exercise n° 1 page 15 Solution: * “Order” means: degrees come in decreasing order
10
Multiplying monomials To multiply monomials (also called develop): – Multiply coefficients together – Multiply terms together Examples: coefficients terms (rearrange) develop
