5. Mini-Lesson Characters: Characters create the story. Without interesting and usually, at least one, sympathetic character a novel would not exist. Often we read fiction because we like or dislike a character in the book. The objective of this lesson is to look at characters. Choose one of the characters introduced thus far and address a letter to him/her. In your letter state why you like him or her, what you like about him/her, how you imagine her/him to appear, what you don't like about her/him, and what you think she/he is going to be in the book - the bad guy, good guy, or someone neutral. Review Ch. 15 Read Ch. 16

Have them decide what kinds of flaws are acceptable in a protagonist, what is not. What traits make most people like a character? What traits make most people dislike a character? Hook: Review the chapter abstracts for Ch. 14-16: Chapter 14: *Jakkin and his dragon are swimming when streaks of red appear in his mind and he notices a drakk overhead. * Jakkin prepares to fight the drakk, drawing it to him with the smell of dragon on the shirt his dragon where has been cuddled. * Jakkin manages to kill the drakk and is injured in the process, though his dragon licks the wounds which start healing quickly. * Jakkin wakes to find Akki at his oasis and she has taken care of his wounds and promises not to reveal his secret. * While Jakkin and Akki are taking the drakk back to the bondhouse, Jakkin thinks about Akki and what her story is. Chapter 15: *The bonders celebrate the killing of the male drakk with cake and Sarkkhan rewards Jakkin with gold. *Jakkin mentions that Akki should also be rewarded, but she storms off saying she will accept no money from Sarkkhan. * Akki later explains her past and how she feels about taking money from any man and avers that no man is her master. * Jakkin and Akki return to the oasis and play with the dragon and Akki offers to borrow some dragon training books for Jakkin. Chapter 16: Akki brings Jakkin several books on dragon training and some training suits and teaches him dragon anatomy. * Though Akki helps Jakkin, their relationship is sometimes strained and she often goes off by herself. * Jakkin continues to work with his dragon, teaching it to get out of a wing pin and learning that his dragon can fly, though it returns to him.

Jakkin's decision to walk inside the bunkhouse even after his angry exit, shows he is responsible, in that he knows a drakk can kill the hatchlings, and he knows he has to report what he saw. The objective of this lesson is to look at responsibility. In groups students will list the responsibilities of adults in society. How might have Jakkin not fulfilled those responsibilities? Further, their play at the oasis shows that the dragon has a deep trust already with Jakkin, which will come into play later in the novel.
