The Study of Life Science on Daily Life Experience. Dr. Chen, I-shin Professor of University of Taipei, Taiwan Presented at SSMA 2013 in San Antonio, Texas.
2
Abstract The purpose of the study was to design life science activities and interpret the principles of these hands-on activities. All hands-on activities covered Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Surface Tension, Light, Thermodynamics, and etc. There are five activities as below: 1) pressure of atmosphere; 2) Bernoulli’s equation of balloon or paper propeller; 3) surface tension of paper-ship; 4) interference phenomena of soap bulbs; 5) heat effects and upside down Top and others. The study will provide another kind of teaching method also provide teaching materials for elementary school teachers and a new research branch for science educators. Key words: Surface Tension, Pressure of Atmosphere, Bernoulli’s Equation.
3
1) Pressure of Atmosphere The researcher tries to show the effect of atmosphere pressure, for example, use an empty aluminum bottle and put 20 ml into it and then heat it by putting it above the oven for 2 minutes. The teacher can ask students to count down from 20 to 0 at 1 minute 40 seconds, and then the heated bottle upside down put into water tank quickly.
4
The students can observe the destroyed bottle by atmosphere pressure. Movie “Nov.15,SSMA-2”
5
The Bernoulli’s equation of balloon propeller or paper propeller Bernoulli’s equation: P 1 +1/2 v 1 ²+ gh 1 =P 2 +1/2 v 2 ²+ gh 2 h 1 =h 2 P 1 +1/2 v 1 ²=P 2 +1/2 v 2 ²
6
v 1> v 2 P 1 <P 2 F 1 =P1A F 2 =P 2 A F 1 <F 2 There is a force F 2 -F 1 in shadow area and to right according to central axis.
7
P 3 +1/2 v 3 ² + gh 3 =P 4 +1/2 v 4 ²+ gh 4 h 3 =h 4 P 3 +1/2 v 3 ²=P 4 +1/2 v 4 ² v 3 >v 4 P 3 <P 4 F 3= P 3 A F 4 =P 4 A F 3 <F 4 There is a force F 4 -F 3 in shadow area and to left according to central axis.
8
So According to the central axis, the paper propeller will rotate in counterclockwise through central axis.

3) Surface tension of paper ship The paper ship is covered a little soap in the margin of the tail of the paper ship. The soap element will destroy the surface tension of water in the tail of the ship, and then the surface tension of water of the head will pull it forward.
22
4) Interference phenomena of soap bulbs The thickness of the soap bulb is very thin when the bulb is approaching the ball-shape. According to the condition of film interference based on light, the thickness of the bulb is equal to one- fourth light wave length.
23
Suppose the thickness is d, so 2d= /2, 3 /2, 5 /2, and etc., i.e. d= /4, 3 /4, 5 /4, and etc. So there are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and seven colors owing to the difference thickness of the soap bulb.
24
The phenomena of soap bulb is a good teaching material. The researcher suggests that elementary teachers can teach the phenomena by using hands-on activities.
28
5) (a) Heat effect and upside down top Almost of materials will expand when the temperature increases, in other way, almost of them will contraction when the temperature decreases. Under this condition, some phenomena happened such as malformed table tennis balls will be recover under hot water.
29
(b) Upside down top The specific top can upside down when it rotates owing to its semi-sphere shape. It follows mechanics laws, e.g. the conservation of energy, momentum, angular momentum.
30
Owing to a friction force at touch point of the top, the top will keep the conservation of angular moment and then it will upside down.
37
Other life science such as: Celt for mechanics, water chestnut for sound, color wheel for optics, and etc.
