Quick History of numbers: Hunter-gatherer societies lumped things into “a lot” or “a little”. When farming developed and trade began, people used stones, clay tokens, or other objects to keep count of animals, grain, oil, and the like. They traded one-to- one. Eventually, they started drawing pictures instead of using stones. These drawings developed into tally marks and became more complex over time. In and attempt to keep track of things, early humans invented numbers. Basic Math and Pre-Algebra for Dummies by Mark Zegarelli

Over time, the Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Mayans, Arabs, and Chinese, just to name a few, developed their own systems of writing numbers. You have seen Roman numerals. Our system, Hindu- Arabic numbers, is based on the early Arabic numbers or the decimal system. As we work through formulas and sets of numbers this year, we’ll talk about who developed them.
