Words to Know Qualitative Variables Quantitative Variables Discrete Variables Continuous Variables Nominal Level of Measurements Ordinal Level of Measurements Interval Level of Measurements Ratio Level of Measurements Measurement Scales
3
Qualitative Variables Variables that can be placed into distinct categories according to some characteristics or attribute Ex: The gender (male or female) then the variable gender is qualitative, these variables are religious preference and geographic locations
4
Quantitative Variables Numerical and can be ordered or ranked Ex: Variable ages are numerical (height, weight, and body temperature)
5
Discrete Variables They can be assigned variables such as 0, 1, 2 and 3 and are said to be countable Ex: Number of children in family, number of student in classroom, and the number of calls received by a switch board operator each day for a month.
6
Continuous Variables Can assume an infinite number of values in an interval between any two specific values Temperature for example is a continuous variable, they often include fractions, decimals and measuring
7
Measurement Scales A type of classifications that tells how variables are categorized, counted or measured There are 4 types…………
8
Type one: NOMINAL “ Nominal Level of Measurements” classified data into mutually exclusive categories in which no order or ranking can be imposed on the data Ex: Male and female, political parties
9
Type 2: ORDINAL “Ordinal Level of Measurements” classified data into categories that can be ranked, however precise differences between the rank do not exists Ex: From students evaluations, guessed speakers might be ranked as superior, average, or poor Ex: People classified on their build or grades
10
Type 3: INTERVAL “Interval Level of Measurements” ranked data and precise differences between unit of measure do exist, however there is no meaningful zero. Ex: IQ and temperature
11
Type 4: RATIO “Ratio Level of Measurements” possesses all the characteristics of interval measurements in there exists a true zero. In addition true ratios exists when the same variables is measure on two different members of the population Ex: Measure height, weight, area, and number of phone calls recieved
12
Questions??? What are the 4 Measurement Skills? What is Qualitative? True or False: Is it true that nominal can be classified into one category? True or False: Is Discrete one of the 4 measurements? True or False: in Ratio Level a true zero exisits
