6. History, about Zaolzie ZAOLZIE was an integral part of the historically formed Cieszyn Duchy. From the first half of the 19 th century this region underwent important economical, political, demographical and national changes. Many things were changing – citizenship, official languages, names of the country Zaolzie belonged to – but the language spoken by the people was still the same – Silesian Polish. The region has always been rich in natural resources – like coal and iron ore. That is why after the first world war, when the Austrio – Hungarian Monarchy fell, both Poland and Czechoslovakia were very interested in this region. After a fierce clash of interests the Zaolzie region became a part of Czechoslovakia in 1920 and in 2003, when Czechoslovakia split into two independent countries – the Czech Republic and Slovakia – it is a part of the Czech Republic even if there is still a large Polish minority.
