1 GENRE Definition: A type or class of book FICTION: Realistic & Historic Reference Non-fiction Biography & Autobiography

2 FICTION An Imaginary Story about people or animals. Examples include: Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Birdwell, Junie B. Jones books by Barbara Park, and The Magic Tree House books by Mary Osborne.

3 Realistic or Historical fiction Realistic fiction – what is it? Imaginary stories set in a real setting. Historical fiction – what is it? Imaginary stories set in a historical setting. 4 NON-FICTION Fact Books, Folktales, Poetry, Joke Books, History Books Examples include: Books About Space Folktales like “Little Red Riding Hood,” The Three Little Pigs,” or “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” Poetry Books

5 BIOGRAPHY Books written about the life of a famous person Examples include: A Book about a President such as George Washington or George Bush A Book about a sports star such as Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan A Book about a famous business person such as Mr. Hershey or Mr. Levi.

6 REFERENCE Books used in the library to find information about certain subjects. Dictionaries – Used to find the meaning or spelling of a word. Thesaurus – Used to find another word or synonym to use for a word. For example: mad = upset Encyclopedia – Used to find detailed information about a person, place or thing. The information is always about something that has already happened in the past (historical). Almanac – Used to find lists of facts. Examples include: population, zip codes, famous entertainers, book award winners, and Olympic winners. Atlas – Used to find maps of continents, countries, states and cities. Examples include: North America, United States, Oklahoma and Tulsa.
