What are the pros and cons of breast screening? + SAVES LIVES. – Breast screening is estimated to save around 1,300 lives a year from breast cancer in the UK - LEADS TO OVERDIAGNOSIS AND UNNECESSARY TREATMENT – Around 4,000 women a year will be diagnosed with a cancer that would never have become life-threatening, and they will be treated unnecessarily 17

How can practice staff help women understand the benefit and risk? USE THE NEW NHS SCREENING LEAFLETS AS A GUIDE – Acknowledge that these are difficult issues, so it’s normal to feel confused or uncertain. Patients can talk to their GP or Practice Nurse for more inforamtion. EXPLAIN CLEARLY – The concept of overdiagnosis is difficult! Explain that these cancers didn’t need to be picked up, and some women will have chemotherapy/radiotherapy /surgery they didn’t need. DON’T PUSH THEM TO TAKE UP SCREENING – Whether to have breast screening is an individual choice and there is no right or wrong answer. 20
21
Patients that DNA 21 DNA letter sent to lady 3-4 days after appointment missed and GP copied in. 2 nd breast screening appointment sent out approx 4 months later. If 2 nd appointment missed the lady can contact NLBSS to request a breast screening appointment.
