Municipal Waste - Waste to Energy By Brendan O’Sullivan
2
Physical Description of resource Name of energy resource? – Municipal waste or waste to energy What is it? – Garbage or trash we throw out what dose it look like – anything we would throw out food, broken furniture, and anything else where dose the energy come from – the burning of the waste is how the energy is formed What scale is the resource available? - The waste is available at both large and home scale plants the large scale produces more electricity and they burn it a lot cleaner To what degree is this resource renewable or non renewable? – It is a renewable resource because we are constantly throwing out our trash which keeps the plants burning our trash to produce energy Availability? – The resource can be found anywhere there is trash being thrown out humans produce the waste and the garbage company brings it to the plant to be ran to produce electricity this resource Is found all over the world and is starting to be a more efficient way to remove trash and stop land fills
3
Technology The technology consolidating our trash and burning it, which powers a turbine that is connected to a generator. That then produces electricity for a surrounding area The system is still being modified to produce less of an environment impact and to burn greener
4
Uses In the past, the resource was dumped into landfills and left there to rot. It was a waste of space and not environmentally-friendly, so recently they have been burning it, producing electricity for towns and cities Over the next 10-20 years more and more states will start using this form of power generation and it will over time be greener when modified to make little to no impact on the environment
5
Environmental and safety issues Due to the fact that it is a newer type of power plant, the gases and other toxic particles could be harmful to the environment and over long periods of being exposed could be bad for your health. Scientists are in the process of monitoring the bad smell of having to work with it everyday and seeing what years of doing it does to effect the human body and the environment.
6
Economic issues It costs a lot to build the power plant. It can be as much as 200 million dollars Will create many jobs and aims to help the environment It’s a dangerous job to do and the lasting effects are not yet known
