Purpose of WSE To identify, acknowledge and affirm good practice in schools To promote continuing improvement in the quality of education offered by schools To promote self-evaluation and continuous development by schools and staffs To provide an assurance of quality in the education system as a whole based on the collection of objective, dependable, high quality data and reports

Inspection and Support WSE models Standard WSE: quality of management, planning, learning and teaching in the full range of curriculum areas, support for pupils Small school WSE: similar but reduced range of curriculum areas Focused inspections: whole- school focus with particular attention to specific areas of curriculum, planning, management or support for pupils Incidental inspections: short visits to observe ongoing operation of school Support for curriculum implementation for school development planning LDS DEIS Dimishing resources Reduction in support An opportunity to reflect and take stock A time to consolidate new practice

Engagement with WSE Focus on what is important Work smarter not harder Be realistic Use resources wisely Engage with WSE process Normal SDP/SSE process Decide priorities using available data and determine CPD needs Review post-holder duties to match current priorities Plan for implementation: reduce paper work, concise policy statements Enable whole-school approach to individual planning, methodologies, curriculum approaches and assessment Encourage sharing of good practice Highlight current strengths, priorities, achievements Articulate how school is operating in its own particular context

The probationary process is designed to ensure that Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) have a period in which they can develop their teaching skills … Role of the principal Assist teachers to develop as professionals Promote high standards of teaching and learning Encourage reflection – teacher as learner and CPD – teacher a lifelong learner Initial induction in school Creating a learning environment Planning and preparation (PPDS/NPPTI websites) Effective teaching and learning Assessment and record keeping Role of principals in the probationary process
