2 1. Where does the story begin? -It begins high above the Artic Circle.

4 Writing Style After she finished writing the novel, Mary Shelley changed the beginning to introduce Captain Walton. Why? When Mary Shelley lived, it was popular in novels to introduce a character like Captain Walton. This is because the main character (Victor Frankenstein) can become the narrator and tell their story to this person. In Japanese stories, the voice that says “ 昔々あるところに,” is the narrator`s voice.

10 2. When does the story begin to move? -When Captain Walton found Victor Frankenstein on the ice. Captain Walton is exploring in the Artic Circle. Captain Walton and his men rescue Victor Frankenstein. This is the Rising Action of the Frame Story.

11 3. Why did the man go onto Captain Walton`s ship? -Because Captain Walton was heading north.

12 4. Who had a story to tell? -Victor Frankenstein did.

13 5. What happened to the ship when Victor Frankenstein was telling his story? -The ship became locked fast in the ice.
