Modern Makeover: Technical Services ● Project Goal: Vision for how area could be reconstructed to better meet the needs of current staff and workflow processes High-Tech Reno: Public Space ● Project Goal: Create a space more conducive to study and research to enhance student learning and success Design Challenge

Industrial Systems Engineering Student Teams ● Library Card (Technical Services Project) ● Maggie DeMarco, Lauren Famighette, Jamie Jarett, Amanda Lemieux & Alexander Molinelli ● By the Books (Public Space Project) ● Michael Bush, Franciele Ferrarezzo, Sara Kohtz, Katherine Leenig, Kyle Streb & Colleen Turner Library Advisors ● Aleshia Huber, Engineering Librarian ● Jill Dixon, Director of Public Services ● Sandy Card, Director of Technical Services Renovation Project Teams
4
Space Factors ●Faculty assigned private offices ●Professional and clerical staff in group rooms or private offices ●Shelving easily reachable in all areas ●Extra work tables in some areas ●Unable to move elevators, restrooms, loading dock and mechanical rooms (network equipment, water pipes, elevator mechanics) ●Fire entrance/exit area kept clear Overarching Functions ●Mail receiving / processing ●Acquisitions of print / electronic materials ●Subscription renewal for continuing resources ●Cataloging of print / electronic materials ●Book / binding preparation ●Gifts receiving / processing ●Preservation Library Card: Technical Services Project
5
Current Departmental Needs ● Work spaces: ● 27 staff (6 faculty, 12 professionals, 9 clerical staff) ● Student workers ● Conference room ● Loading dock area (receive / mail packages) ● Digitization Lab with computer and scanners ● Book / binding preparation area ● Gift storage area ● Staging area (new materials) ● Elevators (moving materials) Library Card: Space Consideration
6
Problem Statement ● Technical Services area does not meet the needs of current staff ● Area is on list for asbestos abatement ● If abated, most likely scenario: ● Current office walls would be removed ● Columns, hall walls would remain ● Mechanicals must remain ● Currently some spaces too large, others too small ● Impediments (door thresholds exist) ● Flooring inconsistent (mix of carpet and tile) Library Card: Renovation Plan
7
● Based on interviews with all Technical Services staff, create multiple workspace designs for department (implemented after asbestos abatement) ● Design workspaces to: ● Meet the needs of current staff ● Promote healthy work environment ● Create spaces that encourage communication yet provide privacy ● Recommend replacement furniture that provides comfort with efficiency ● Implement new lighting and flooring ● Create spaces for materials before and after processing Library Card: Project Goals

New design for Technical Services -- Design 2 9
10
● “Outsiders” view was very important. (lacked baggage keeping us from trying new things) ● Students spent 4 years learning skills. (we are amateurs and lacked engineering knowledge) ● Technical Services staff liked being interviewed to discuss what they did, what needs were not being met, what needs were being met. ● Since this was their class, students had dedicated time to explore options on rearranging the space and to research lighting, flooring, etc. ● We met weekly to consult with students, we did not feel that we were left out of the process and they were receptive to our comments. Lessons We Learned
11
● They learned a lot more about how a library worked (oh, if they had only done this as Freshmen!!). ● It gave them real world experience, the library was their client, they were the consultants. We worked together but they were responsible for the end result. ● It was what the staff actually wanted that was important, not what the students thought they would like. And most importantly: ● Trying to please 27 very different people and to meet their needs is not easy!! Lessons They Learned
12
● End of project survey of Technical Services staff found: ● 100% stated that the new layouts better suited their needs. ● Sample comment: “I think you did a good job of designing a layout that will make it easier to do our jobs – the wider hallways, the lack of thresholds, the sound absorbing floors, etc.” Did it work?
13
Space Factors ● Information Commons (computers, printers, scanners) ● Group study rooms ● Adaptive technology room ● Research Help Desk ● IT Help Desk ● Reference collection Overarching Functions ● Quiet study space ● Collaborative study ● Research help ● IT assistance By the Books: Public Space Project
14
Current & Future Needs ● How can the space be improved? ● How do we determine student satisfaction with the space? Current Use ● How is space being used? ● Is the space being used effectively? ● Does it meet the needs of our students? By the Books: Space Consideration
15
● Increase the utilization of space to increase user satisfaction and performance in the library ● Improvements should focus on: ● “What the students/users of the space want?” ● “What do the statistics and data analysis of current space show is the behavior at the library?” ● “What behavior do we want to promote in the library space?” By the Books: Project Goals

17
Information Commons ● 70 new computers (284 total) ● 162 PC ● 122 Mac ● Reference stacks moved to new space with compact shelving ● Noise Reduction Materials ● Centralized Printing Hub to reduce wait time ● Condensed Computer Help desk ● Removed Practice Presentation room By the Books: Renovation Plan

Current East Reading Room ● Individual wood study carrels ● Lounge furniture By the Books: Current Space
20
New East Reading Room ● Reservation system ● 23 new group study rooms ● 21 small (seats 4) ● 2 large (seats 8) By the Books: Renovation Floor Plan Steelcase: https://www.steelcase.com/resources/space-planning-ideas/weh13sxa/?pdf...
21
● Efficient way to reach out to library patrons to collect data ● Survey results reflected college size and class distribution (C.I. 92.4%) ● Peer-to-peer effective method for data gathering ● Focus on student population desires and see most efficient option for them ● More computers versus Research Help Desk ● Access to knowledge not available in the library ● Ability to run engineering simulation models to determine printer locations ● AutoCAD layouts of redesign ● Human factors and ergonomics concepts ● Study habits not necessarily as it appears to us Lessons We Learned
22
● Discover new library places and services ● Cost of renovation ● Library cares about student spaces ● Library space involves several departments, both internal and external ● Libraries are more complicated than they appear ● There is appropriate behavior in the library! Lessons They Learned
23
● Different than Technical Services – focus on user not staff ● Analysis of data and feedback will be used for future renovations ● We view space differently based on their work Did It Work?
24
● Working with students provide different, unbiased perspective ● Peer-to-peer data gathering beneficial ● Access to different skills and experience ● If a course project, dedicated time to research and develop space plan ● Good renovation takes time (two-semester project) ● Provided optimal designs while meeting needs of library staff ● Provided students with “real-world” experience Conclusion
