Bennie D Waller, Longwood University Intelligent Information Systems  Artificial Intelligence – attempts to simulate human thought behavior and is concerned with generating and displaying knowledge and facts.

Bennie D Waller, Longwood University Intelligent Information Systems FieldOrganizationApplications EnergyArco and Tenneco Oil Company Neural networks used to help pinpoint oil and gas deposits GovernmentInternal Revenue Service Software used to read tax returns and spot fraud Human servicesMerced County, California Expert systems used to decide if applicants should receive welfare benefits MarketingSpiegel Neural networks used to determine most likely buyers from a long list TelecommunicationsBT Group Heuristic search used for a scheduling application that provides work schedules for more than 20,000 engineers TransportationAmerican Airlines Expert systems used to schedule the routine maintenance of airplanes

Bennie D Waller, Longwood University Intelligent Information Systems  Robotics - perform well at simple, repetitive tasks and can be used to free workers from tedious or hazardous jobs.  Expert systems - mimic human expertise in a particular field to solve a problem in a well- defined area. IF/THEN decisions  See components of an expert system provided in text

Bennie D Waller, Longwood University Intelligent Information Systems  Intelligent Agents – aka “bots” is `software capable of reasoning and following rule-based processes; they are becoming more popular, especially in e-commerce.  Shopping and information agents (“pricewatch.com”  Personal agents – filling out web addresses or forwarding emails  Data mining agents- looks for trends, e.g. economic downturns.

Bennie D Waller, Longwood University Intelligent Information Systems  Neural networks - networks that learn and are capable of performing tasks that are difficult with conventional computers, such as playing chess, recognizing patterns in faces and objects, and filtering spam e-mail. ANNs are used for many tasks, including the following: – Bankruptcy prediction – Credit rating – Investment analysis – Oil and gas exploration – Target marketing
