3. Read Aloud It was still dark when Flora went out to collect eggs from the chicken coop. She wanted to get to school early to practice her spelling words for the test. “Liberty,l-i-b-e-r- t-y,” she said to herself as she walked across the yard. As Flora approached the coop, she heard the hens squawking in alarm. “A fox!” she thought. It must have found a way in through a gap in the boards. Flora’s heart was pounding. She knew she had to chase the fox out before it attacked one of the hens. Slowly she opened the door and looked into the darkness. At first she saw nothing. Then she spied a small form by the back wall. Two shiny eyes looked back at her. Flora acted quickly. She flung open the door and banged her pail against the outside wall of the coop. The frightened fox slipped by her and ran off into the darkness.
