22
What are the Basic Ratio Skills/facts?
23
Be able to describe quantities using the correct ratio notation (order as read) Be able to simplify ratios (write them using smallest whole numbers where each quantity represents the same unit) Understand the relationship between ratios and fractions (ie. ratio of red to green is 2:5 then 2 / 7 are red) Understand the relationship between ratios and fractions (ie. ratio of red to green is 2:5 then 2 / 7 are red) Sharing in a given ratio Using ratio to solve problems/best buys
24
Lesson Objective Be able to share things in a given Ratio Its not a good day and I’m feeling grumpy so I decide to give out 15 detentions sharing them between boys and girls in my Year 10 class in the ratio 2:3? How many detentions do the girls get?
25
1)Share 30 detentions between the boys and girls in the ratio 3:2. 2)Share 60 detentions between the boys and girls in the ratio 1:3 3)£360 is to be shared between Sam and Ashley in the ratio 1:3. How much does each receive? 4)The profit from a company is shared between myself and my partner in the ratio 3:4. If my partner made a profit of £600, how much profit did I make? 5)The ratio of red to green to black sweets in a tube is 4:5:3. If there are 9 black sweets, how many sweets are there all together?
26
Lesson Objective: Understand the variety of ways that we can solve problems involving ‘best value’ Understand how we ‘show’ are answer to get the best marks
27
Eg Which is better value? 4 packets of crisps for £2 8 packets of crisps for £3 How do you know?
28
Which is better value? 4 packets of crisps for £2 6 packets of crisps for £2.80
29
Which is better value? 4 chocolate bars for 80p 10 chocolate bars for £1.80
30
Which is better value? 6 pencils for £1.80 10 pencils for £3.20
31
Which is better value? 3 bottles of coca-cola for £4 5 bottles of coca-cola for £5.60
32
If it isn’t obvious by comparing like for like work out how much one would cost for each by using a calculator. This is called the UNITARY METHOD. 3 bottles of coca-cola for £4 5 bottles of coca-cola for £5.60 1 bottle = 4 ÷ 3 = 1.33333… = £1.33 1 bottle =5.60 ÷ 5 = 1.12 = £1.12 This deal is cheaper
33
A supermarket sells jars of coffee of the same brand in two different sizes. Which jar gives the better value for money? You must show your working. Answer................................................. (Total 3 marks)
36
5Pietro (3 mph) is slower than Adriana (4 mph). 6 1 pint (2 pints 32.5p per pint, 4 pints32.25p per pint) 7 Packet of 16 (packet of 4 £ 2.38 for 16 sausages) 8 Zanib 1.807 fish per day, Tracey 1.776 fish per day, so Zanib caught more fish per day. 9 Medium bottle as small £ 4 per litre and large £ 3.80 per litre 10 60 miles (96 km), 88 km (55 miles) so 60 miles is further.
37
