She is responsible for making sure that all employees know and follow safety policies and procedures. One morning, Cathy’s supervisor calls her to inform her that she needs to create a company-wide training refresher to roll out new policies and revisions to existing procedures. She is interested in adult learning techniques and realizes that there may be creative ways to approach this learning opportunity.

Choices, Choices… Option 1Option 2Option 3 Below are three options Cathy is considering for her safety training refresher course. Which is her best option? Click Next when you have reviewed all options. View Scenario Introduction Create a Job Aid for distribution to all employees; it will outline safety policies and procedures necessary for the environment and any changes. Develop an asynchronous video that employees can access anytime, anywhere that depicts employees demonstrating examples of safety “best practices”. Write a traditional classroom session in which employees sit in a classroom and listen to an instructor.
6
You selected Option 1, creating a job aid. While a job aid is a useful way to provide takeaway or summary information, it may not be the best way to present new concepts. Adult learners are motivated to learn and want to be engaged; they will not gain much from being handed a document to read without any other learning taking place. This method also leaves employees on their own to figure things out. Cathy may consider using a job aid to supplement a more formal learning session. Option 1 Pop up Click Try Again or X above.
7
You selected Option 2, creating an asynchronous video. Cathy wanted to be creative in her approach to this training, and appeal to adult learners. She knows that they tend to be self-directed, and the ability to access a video anytime would appeal to them, and visualizing safety concepts will help with retention. However, this method leaves employees on their own to figure things out, and is not interactive. This format is a good method for Cathy to use to deliver the safety training, but may need some enhancements. Option 2 Pop up Click Try Again or X above.

You selected Option 3, the classroom session. A traditional classroom is a formal environment, but employees will not have access to materials until then ends; however, this option allows adult learners to integrate their own experiences and engage in real- time, problem-centered learning. A classroom session is a good solution for Cathy; integrating the experiential and problem-centered learning into an asynchronous course would be another good option. Cathy has decided to integrate the safety video into an online course format, with knowledge checks and interactivities to ensure learners are retaining important information. While Cathy is hard at work, the phone rings again. Her supervisor is calling to say that the company needs to have a record that employees have had access to annual learning opportunities. How might Cathy integrate this new information into the training? A New Bit of Information… Click Next to continue. View Scenario Introduction

Integrating Proof of Access into the Mix Option 1Option 2Option 3 Below are three options Cathy is considering to generate a record of access for employees. Click through to see the pros and cons of each. Click Next when you have reviewed all options.View Scenario Introduction Create a Job Aid summarizing critical information; employees will print it out at completion of the course. Tag the course in the company learning management system so an automatic message will generate when employees elect to take the safety course. Design an end-of- course assessment that employees are scored on; scores are proof of accessing the course.
12
You selected Option 1, the summary job aid. This is a good option, since employees will have something to take with them after they complete the course for future reference. In addition, the printing of the job aid can serve as proof of access. Cathy’s best option would be to combine the job aid with the other options—an assessment to measure learning and an automatic notification in the LMS to prove access. Option 1 Pop up Click Try Again or X above.
13
You selected Option 2, the auto-generated notification in the company LMS. This is the most efficient way for the company to track who has accessed the course. However, it does not provide any benefit to employees in terms of takeaways or knowledge retention. This would be a great option integrated with the other two—the job aid and end-of- course assessment—so the company can track access and employees have a record of what they learned. Option 2 Pop up Click Try Again or X above.
14
You selected Option 3, the scored end-of- course assessment. This is a great option since the score can help employees measure their own learning and motivate them to do more, and it can also track access since employees who have not taken the course will not have a score recorded. Cathy may consider combining this option with the other two—the job aid and LMS tag—to provide a comprehensive learning package. Option 3 Pop up Click Try Again or X above.

Once the safety course has launched, Cathy’s supervisor Bill gives her a call. He likes how Cathy integrated adult learning principles such as engagement, self-direction, and the ability to use information immediately into the course. He is also glad that there is a way to measure knowledge retention and provide employees with a takeaway job aid. Expert Feedback End of Case Study.
