Unit 3 Locating Places On A Map When giving directions you need to know: Where you are & Where you want to go. A Compass rose show directions in terms of North East South West.

The principal points of a compass are North (N) East (E) South(S) West(W). Halfway between points are northeast (NE), Southeast (SE), Southwest(SW), Northwest (NW). A further subdivision of the directions between these eight points leads to another set of points of which north-northeast

Using all these compass points soon become very complicated and is still not precise. Directions can be given more accurately and much easier using compass bearings. Compass bearing are measure in degrees instead of compass points.

Grid Systems The most common way to locate a place on a map is to use a grid system. Alphanumeric Grid- uses letters and numerals to identify squares in a grid patter. These are often used on road maps. Grid squares are identified by a letter along one edge of a map and a number along another.
