Electricity & Magnetism Chapter 7 Section 1 Electric Charge

Warm Up Diagram an atom. Include the 3 main subatomic particles

Static Electricity Atoms are made of charged particles: –Electrons: orbit the nucleus of the atom and have a negative charge –Protons: bound in the nucleus of the atom and have a positive charge

Static Electricity The accumulation of excess electric charge on an object is called static electricity

Static Electricity Charges exert forces on each other: –Like charges repel –Opposite charges attract

Static Electricity Charges do not have to touch to exert these forces Surrounding every electric charge, there is an electric field. Any charge in an electric field will be pushed or pulled

Electric Charge Conductor: a material in which electrons are able to move easily Insulator: a material in which electrons are not able to move easily

Charging Objects Charging by contact: transferring charge by touching or rubbing Charging By Contact

Charging Objects Charging by Induction: the rearrangement of electrons on a neutral object caused by a nearby charged object Charging By Induction

Charging Objects Grounding: connecting an object to the Earth with a conductor so the excess charge will not build up

Charging Objects

Circuits A Circuit is a closed path through which electric charge flows. Excess electric charges repel and flow toward a positively charged area
