2 SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY) Poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) are polymers that present high selectivity and affinity towards CO 2, and fully reversible and fast adsorption/desorption cycles. Therefore, PILs are promising as sorbent and membrane materials for CO 2 capture and/or separation. The project aims at developing PILs with increased surface area or nanostructure inspired by porous solid materials (zeolites, active carbon, MOFs, etc) widely used for gas adsorption purposed. It is expected that both, the permeability of the polymer and the contact surface towards CO 2 to enhance physical interaction of the CO 2 with the material will be increased. The new materials could be based on surface grafted ionic liquids and PILs on silica nanoparticles or on renewable raw materials such as cellulose nanofibers. PROJECT OBJECTIVES  Development of innovative technologies and materials for CO 2 capture applications. PROJECT IMPACT  Significant reduction of the energy penalty of the whole capture process for power plants or other energy-intensive industries. Project Idea
