2 What is Gateway? Government funded initiative introduced by the Tertiary Education Commission School-based and workplace learning linked Structured workplace learning in an industry of interest Gain industry & NCEA qualifications Its purpose is to strengthen the pathway from school to workplace learning.

3 Gateway Programme in Schools Introduced to NZ schools in 2003 (Burnside High in 2009) Selection by interview Run in classes as an option line Core Generic / Industry Unit Standards Students in workplace learning one day per week from term one Consistent positive results

9 Example of 2011 Gateway student experience Ashleigh – interested in tourism Gains Gateway work placement at Antarctic Centre Completes the ATTTO Gateway Units for his Individual Learning Plan Unit Standards can be cross credited to her Level 3 NCEA Ashleigh was offered a part-time job at the Antarctic Centre The practical skills and industry knowledge Ashleigh has gained will gives her a significant advantage when seeking a full time job.
