1 TP-1 Teaching Philosophy for MS&E 247S International Investments  Inspiring students to apply the methodologies they already know and to learn the other methodologies they will need to understand current literature in the hot field of International Investments. Often, MS&E students found that they are just an inch away from applying what they have learned in the core courses. This course attempts to encourage students with theoretical background to quickly enter an interesting and promising field. Two masters students finished this course and got interested in the financial engineering concentration. They are now obtaining their professional financial engineering degrees from another heavy-weight institution in the bay area.

2 TP-2 Teaching Philosophy for MS&E 247S International Investments  Bridging the gap between academic theory and industry practice. The instructor maintains close contact with the industry and understands exactly what they need for their new hiring. Students who complete this course often appreciate the breadth and essential domain knowledge (e.g., jargons) when they interview for jobs within the financial sector (e.g., investment banking, financial services).

3 TP-3 Teaching Philosophy for MS&E 247S International Investments  Preparing students to obtain various certificates (e.g., the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Examination) while teaching students new material and reviewing the relevant material for them. Several students who completed this course are going to take the CFA exams this summer.

4 TP-4 Teaching Philosophy for MS&E 247S International Investments  Introducing the most current on-going research to students in a semi-formal yet enjoyable way. Students are led to study the current literature using a multidisciplinary approach and/or several methodologies. Students are encouraged to apply more than one methodology to study the same problem so that they obtain new insights and appreciate different aspects. It is an era of compromise in research methodologies – optimization models coexist with computational approximation and computer simulation.

5 TP-5 Teaching Philosophy for MS&E 247S International Investments  Covering a few subjects in depth to build the core competencies for the course, mentioning relevant concepts and providing reference material to allow interested students to explore the hot subject areas when they have the extra capacity to explore the breadth of this course. Students are responsible for the key concepts only and should not feel overwhelmed in the exams.
