Canterbury is a city of 50,000 inhabitants in the county of Kent, south-east England. Here we find the oldest church in England, the Church of St Martin (photo below), and we can see the ruins of the abbey of St Augustine (photo left), who reintroduced Christianity to England in 597 AD. St Augustine was the first Archbishop of Canterbury and is venerated by both the Catholic and the Anglican Church. EALDGYTH. Staugustinescanterburyrotundanaveandcathedral.jpg. The Canterbury Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the spiritual head of the Church of England. It was founded in 597 AD by Augustine, and completely rebuilt at the beginning of the 11th century. Thomas Beckett, then Archbishop of Canterbury, was murdered in the Cathedral in 1170. Following his death, Canterbury Cathedral became one of the most important places of pilgrimage for Christians. It is one of the most visited sights in the UK. MUSIL, Hans.
