7 Q. What is Medieval ? Medieval: A time period in history referring to the Middle Ages. This was a time that was old fashioned and not very “cool” at all

8 I. The Middle Ages are divided into 3 parts: Early Middle Ages High Middle Ages Late Middle Ages “We should explore this topic more clearly”

9 The Early Middle Ages These are dark times

10 A. This time period begins with the “fall” of the Roman Empire in the West in 476 AD

11 a. The Roman Empire had kept Europe together

12 b. Without the Roman Empire, Europe fell into chaos

13 c. Few people wanted to travel because of the bad roads

14 E. Trade decreased dramatically! (People went back to a bartering system ) Barter System: People trade one thing for another thing. (No use of dinero) “I’ll trade you this baby for some food!” “sweet”

15 F. Without Roman soldiers & government people to enforce the laws…

16 A power vacuum occurred

17 B. By the start of the High Middle Ages, life had begun to be more stable

18 a. Many separate European Kingdoms (such as England, France, the Papal States, and the Holy Roman Empire) had formed in the West
