1. Futures Day A presentation for tutors to run through futures days programme and clarify aims of event

2. Periods 1-2 Introduce day and explain aims of day – 4 main UCAS aims (see next slide)

3. 4 Main aims- for UCAS process All students register for UCAS- even if they say they are not going to university. They can also complete large sections. It cannot be submitted until September (Periods 1-4) Students start to investigate courses and entry requirements. ( P1-4) All students begin personal statement draft and submit it to tutor by July 8th. ( P1-4) Students prepare for HE exhibition on Monday 20 th June ( P5&6)

4. What about those who don’t want to go to university? We want all students to at least register for UCAS- experience has shown that many students will change their mind later. The UCAS application is also a good place to store information for a CV and the personal statement only needs adapting for an apprenticeship application Students can opt to investigate apprenticeships rather than degree courses using the UCAS website. There is a PowerPoint – Alternatives to university with tasks on Moodle and the WG6 website. They will need to complete 3 tasks by 8 July-

5. Apprenticeships – information sessions To properly convey the idea that we take alternatives to university seriously and encourage their serious consideration Chris Homewood from KCC’s employability section will be speaking to each tutor group through out the day about Apprenticeships. An itinerary will be produced for Chris.

6. UCAS Staff will be given ucas username and password. You can change password The site is set up so that students can say which form they are in. Students use a Buzzword bluewater (WGSB site) connell17 (WGSG site) so that their application is linked to the school rather than being independent which would be too difficult to administer. good idea to familiarise yourself with process if possible also make mock application to help your knowledge. Use Presentation ‘what teachers need to know’ on Moodle and WG6 website

7. Periods 1-4 Introduce Apply process using Powerpoints. Recommended to start with “making- the –right- choices- presentation use this first” Later use the presentation “Applying- to- ucas- presentation” In computer rooms to register for UCAS (Use the booklet ‘preparing for ucas 2017’) and start to complete form and to start course search activity (see next slide) Course search – emailed to you or shown to you- you decide. This activity could be set as homework or as PSHE activity in tutor time ahead. Start personal statement. Use the 2 booklets ‘preparing for ucas 2017’ and ‘writing an effective personal statement’ Also ‘10 commandments’ – on Moodle/WG6 website. This activity will be a PSHE activity in tutor time ahead but students will also need to do this as a homework activity. excellent ucas video on personal statements There will also be time to work on the personal statement on Monday after we come back form the HE exhibition- students should bring their booklets to the boys site with some paper and be prepared to work on them

8. Course search- what a good course search should have Compulsory fields Name of University Typical entry qualifications (UCAS tariff or expected A level grades) Dates of Open Days Optional fields Distance from home (miles or time) Travel cost from home Course rating from Unistats web site or or another guide e.g. Guardian guide Types of Accommodation for First Year students Any other useful information.

Periods 5-6 Preparing for the HE Exhibition on Monday Use the Powerpoint- Preparing for the HE exhibition and the booklet Preparing for the HE exhibition to do some preliminary work for Monday’s trip to Medway. The main aims are that students have questions to ask universities at the exhibition and have a clear idea of what universities they want to talk to. You can do the activities as group, paired or individual activities – what ever you feel would work best with your class There will be other institutions there as well for those who are not planning on going to university
