Unit Three Dynamics, Tempo, Articulation

Dynamic Signs Dynamics signs indicate the volume, or how soft or loud the music should be played. The dynamics we will discuss are: pp p mp mf f ff

Tempo Marks Tempo markings tell us how fast or slow the music should be performed. Some common tempo markings are: adagio andante allegro presto vivace

Articulation In Unit Three we will also discuss articulation. This deals with the style in which individual notes or groups of notes should be performed. Some commonly used articulations are: legato staccato slurred

Endings There are many descriptive Italian words and which abbreviations composers use to give instruction on whereto procede when performing a piece of music. Some which are most commonly used are: D.C. = da capo = the beginning D.S. = del segno = the sign coda = tail = a separately written ending Fine = the end
