Texas Settlers will be drawn West by a belief that it was God’s desire to do so (Manifest Destiny). In 1842 and 1846, treaties with England will firm up our northern border with Canada allowing further expansion.

After Mexico gained their independence from Spain, immigration into Texas was encouraged to help settle the land. In 10 years the population goes from 3,500 to 37,800.

Many of the people moving into Mexico came from the Southern states and bring their slaves with them, in direct violation of Mexico’s Constitution.

In 1835 residents of Texas rise up in rebellion against Mexico. The Texans suffer many defeats including the siege of the Alamo while they tried to recruit and train an army

After a year of open war the Texans achieve independence with a victory at the Battle of San Jacinto and form their own country. In 1845 Texas will become part of the US.
