Infant/Child Mortality and Morbidity
At the dawn of the twenty-first century, it is tragic that one in seven Nigerian children die before his or her fifth birthday (FOS/UNICEF, 2000). A baby born in Nigeria is 30 times more likely to die before age five than one born in an industrialised country (NPC/UNICEF,2001). Infant and child mortality rates are exceedingly high, and Nigeria ranks 15th highest in the world among countries with high under-five mortality (UNICEF, 2001). With more than one million children dying annually from preventable diseases, Nigeria is one of the least successful of African countries in achieving improvements in child survival in the past four decades, in spite of advances in universal immunization and oral re-hydration therapy (ORT) for diarrhoeal disease, and the wealth of Nigeria’s human and natural resources.
4
The child survival strategies and interventions are in line with MDGs No 4 which focused on Reducing child mortality by 2/3 of children under five before the year Many countries are now devoted to the child survival interventions as a way of reducing the child mortality
5
Every year nearly 10 million children under age five die, mostly from preventable and treatable diseases. Nearly 27,000 children die every day as a result of diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea and complications during childbirth. 98% of under-5 deaths occur across only 42 developing countries
6
Survival of children is a global imperative
Parents desire to see their children succeed them in all spheres of life African children constitute 1/10th of the World’s children As much as 45% of the population in developing world is made up individual less than 15 years One third of the 40,000 children who died worldwide every day were Africans
7
Of the 20 million children born in Africa each year, 4 million will die before their 5th birthday
In Nigeria: PNMR-90/1000 live birth NNMR-59/1000 live birth IMR- 110/1000 live birth U5-MR-190/1000 live birth

WORLD SUMMIT ON CHILDREN 1990-CONVENTION ON THE RIGHT OF THE CHILD
New impetus for human development 7 major and 20 supporting Goals for: Child Survival, Protection and Development adopted as practical guidelines for establishing the human foundation that is based on the provision of basic health, basic nutrition, basic education and necessary supporting services through low risk, low cost, low resistance, low technological know-how easily accessible and affordable
9
During the last decade, Child Survival in developing countries has been given a prominent place in the World Health agenda Available literature points to the fact that major gains were made in child survival during the 1970s and 1980s; a period when one man’s vision (James Grant UNICEF Executive Director) propelled the world into action with the Child Survival Revolution that focused on Growth Monitoring, Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORS), Breast feeding and Immunization (GOBI) These were later added onto with the 3 Fs namely Family Planning, Female Education and Food supplementation (GOBIFFF) Emphasis has shifted from development of tertiary and curative care structures to the development of PHC interventions summed up in UNICEF-GOBIFFFEETH programme forming the component of the Child Survival Strategy
10
