Can you explain the difference between them? Directions Group Work

a. a track and an album Group Work Key: A track is one individual song or piece of music that is part of an album. An album usually contains ten or more tracks.

b. a CD and a cassette Group Work Key: These are both ways for musicians to record their work. A CD is a compact disc (made of shiny metal) and a cassette is made of magnetic tape enclosed in a plastic cover. CDs are said to give a better quality of reproduction and to have a longer life.

c. a lead singer and a backing group Group Work Key: A lead singer is one main singer featured on a CD or in a concert and a backing group consists of several singers or players who support the lead singer.

d. a hit and a single Group Work Key: A hit is a successful single (usually—although albums can be referred to as hits as well if they sell particularly well) and a single is one song issued/released individually.

e. orchestral music and chamber music Group Work Key: Orchestral music is written for a full orchestra and so can only be played in a larger hall and chamber music is classical music written for a small group of people so that it can be played in a small room.

f. country music and folk music Group Work Key: Country music is a particular style of US music based on the folk music of the south and west USA and folk music is traditional music from any part of the world.

g. muzak and disco music Group Work Key: Muzak is the kind of soft background music played in public places and aimed largely at soothing people and disco music is loud and aimed at encouraging people to dance.

h. soothing music and discordant music Group Work Key: Soothing music is music that calms and relaxes people and discordant music is music that does not follow the normal rules of harmony and so is rather disturbing for most ears.

c. Do you like to have background music while you are working? If so, what kind of background music do you like? Discussion Possible Answer: I sometimes like to have background music on—something reasonably rousing, some Irish folk songs or some songs from musicals, for example.

d. Can you play any musical instruments and how well do you play them? Discussion Possible Answer: I can play the piano a bit but not very well, only for my own pleasure but not for anyone else’s.
