3 What is a listening map?  A graphic representation of a piece of music.  Can be pictures, shapes, and lines.  Fanfare for the Common Man By Aaron Copeland

4 Steps to teaching a song  Sing or play the complete song  Call and Response  Teacher sings a line, then class echoes  May need to do the step several times  Sing the complete song together

5 Reasons to use music in science class  Enhance a lesson  Use popular song parodies.  All about the Base, no acid  Memorize  Create new words to familiar songs:  Solid, Liquid, Gas…..sung to the tune of “The Farmer and the Dell.”

6 Reasons to use music in a soc. studies class  Music is a primary cultural source that can engage students with historical issues.  Most Students have a passion for their music.  In can help to teach about our culture and history.  It can help teach students about other cultures and histories  Help teach about specific time periods.

7 Music and other cultures  Irish:  March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. Began as a religious day for the saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture.  Song: Jig step  “Funga Alafia” is a Nigerian song of greeting. Essentially, it says, we welcome you with peace.

8 Music with holidays  Chinese New Year  The Lunar New Year is the celebration of the year, a time for happy reunions, family and friends, rich in colorful traditions and customs.  Song: Chinese Scarf Dance  Cinco de Mayo  The Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France during the Franco-Mexican War. Celebration of Mexican culture.  The Hat Dance

9 Teach about specific time periods  1960  Protest music became popular  14 th Century  Renaissance music

10 Teach own country’s history  The Star Spangled Banner  The most significant song in American history. It is about the war of 1812.  The Erie Canal  It played an important part in the history of America's early western movement. It was 4 feet deep and 40 feet wide. A 10 foot wide towpath was built along the bank of the canal for horses, mules, and oxen led by a boy driver.

11 Music to learn about Religions  Mardi Gras  Pagan celebrations of spring and fertility. When Christianity leaders decided to incorporate these traditions into the new faith.  When the Saints go marching in  “Little Carnival”  Traditional South American dance that is usually danced at religious festivities.

12 Music in literacy elementary classes Ideas should be based on the students’ grade level  Help memorize and learn grammar rules.  Conjunction Junction song from School House Rock.  Enhance a story or book.  “Over the meadow”  Read while using rhythm instruments

13 Music in Literacy Class for older students  Aid in creative writing.  Read the book: Martin’s Big Words By Doreen Rappaport  Listen to: Symphony of Brotherhood  Have students write about it  Discuss it with the class
