WHAT DO WE DO WHEN ‘LIGHT’ IS NOT ENOUGH???
2
The Electron Microscope Light microscopes can produce a clear image up to approx. 2000XLight microscopes can produce a clear image up to approx. 2000X To magnify smaller objects we use a beam of electrons rather than a beam of lightTo magnify smaller objects we use a beam of electrons rather than a beam of light This produces magnifications greater than 100,000XThis produces magnifications greater than 100,000X With electron microscopes we can produce images of individual atomsWith electron microscopes we can produce images of individual atoms
3
Types of Electron Microscopes Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and the e Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
4
TEM vs. SEM

TEM

SEM

virtual microscopy

Information gathered from scientific investigation or basic research solely to gather information is called PURE SCIENCE Making practical use of that knowledge is called APPLIED SCIENCE
18
What I got from the textbook… Electron microscopes View objects less than o.2 um (limit of light scopes) Use beams of electrons instead of light Produce images 1000X more detailed than light micro. There are two main types of elec. micro.- TEM and SEM TEM- shine beam of elec. Thru thin spec. and reveals detail inside of cell SEM- scan narrow beam elec. back & forth across surface of spec. producing realistic 3-D image of surface of objects ***Living cells can’t be observed with either type because they use a vacuum to operate and specimens must be preserved and dehydrated killing them.

WHAT’S LEFT TO DO? STUDY!!!
20
And what should you study? Your notes and worksheets of including What science is and is not Scientific method (hypothesis vs. theory, inference vs. observation, etc.) Components of an experiment (controls, variable, etc.) Pure vs. Applied science All about Microscopy (simple, compound light, dissecting, TEM, SEM, techniques, calculating magnification, etc.) MICROSCOPE VOCAB. SHEET And anything else we’ve talked about!!!
