IB HL ENGLISH 1 PERIOD 3 MRS. JACQUES TAITUM, AMBER, ZUHA, CHRIS, CONNOR Persepolis IOQ Question #3
2
Marjane’s Family Marji’s father and grandmother were supportive of Marji as a child The father teaches Marji about how the Shah came into power in the vignette “The Water Cell” while the grandmother supported Marji when they went to the demonstration in the vignette, “The Letter,” through the use of minimal captions and facial expressions. Marji's mother is seen as strict towards Marji in the vignette, “The Cigarette,” through her facial expressions and her hand position. Marji makes a comparison between her mother and the torturers.
3
Her Parents The most important thing to Marji’s family was making sure she was safe and had the best opportunities in life. This was best illustrated in the vignette “The Dowry” when Marji’s parents were worried about her due to her argument with the principal and her tailing off her French teacher(Satrapi 143-144). Marji was just to witful for her own good so the family sacrificed losing their only daughter in order to secure her safety and her future.
4
Growing Up During the War Supportive in spite of others’ opinions- “The Veil” pg 8 Instill understanding and empathy- “The Party” pg 45- 46. Didn’t sugar-coat violence or issues- “The Water Cell” pg 24-25. Nationalistic- “The Veil” pg 7. Attempting to maintain a western way of life during a war in the Islamic world in order to raise their daughter in the way they seemed fit, not the regime and to truly promote modernism in their own way. “The Wine” page 105 and the significance of the black curtains. “The Dowry” on page 145 and Marji’s mom’s outburst. Her Environment
5
Source of Parents’ Strength Western modernism supporters were being suppressed at the rise of the Iranian Revolution which resulted to uncertainty, suppression, and depression. Hope for an independent and secure future gives strength to any individual. Marji was her parents’ future, and to keep her independency and security, she was sent to Austria. Her parents had hope which strengthened them that their daughter will be pleased to live in a better environment.

302 Fear controls all Iranians Tone of feeling trapped and confined The lives prior to the exile of the Shah After being to Austria, Marji returns yet still feels incomplete regarding her identity Returning to Iran she is depressed and fear is controlling her Fear of consequences of not being able to express herself…this leads to her attempt at suicide
7
105 Satrapi deals with fear There is no true privacy in Iran Guardians of Revolution will come into one’s home without warrants (this country does not require that legal process) Social acceptance – if one does not conform this will cause an external conflict not just with the government but their neighbors and potentially family Fear is evident here because one does not want to be jailed, tortured, or executed due to breaking Sharia Law
8
Fear in the US as a controlling factor ISIS or terrorists attacks create fear in US When one is fearful of their lives Satrapi shows that her family is most important The Gulf War and invasion of Kuwait by Iraq
