4 FOLK MUSIC  What are some of the features of this genre?  Is folk a popular genre? Do you listen to folk artists?  Who do you think listens to folk?  Where do you hear it?

5 JAZZ MUSIC  What are some of the features of this genre?  Where are you most likely to hear jazz music played?  Anyone have any favorite jazz artists?

6 ROCK MUSIC  What are some of the features of this genre?  Who are some of the artists who stand out?  Where do you hear rock? If you like rock, what decade stands out? (be careful you may show your age!)

7 POP MUSIC  What defines this style of music?  Who are the “standard bearers” of pop music?  Where do you go to hear pop?  What decade stands out here?

8 HIP HOP MUSIC  Who are some of the artists who stand out?  How do you distinguish this genre from others?

9 COUNTRY MUSIC  What are the features of this genre?  Who are some of the artists who stand out?  How has country changed over the years?

10 “Standard Bearers”  What do the standard bearers communicate about the time, place, culture, influences, and circumstances that lead to these musical expressions?  Would Elvis have been a hit in the 30’s? the Beatles in the 50’s?

11 This Week’s Assignments  Discussion Board  Ready for a virtual field trip? Follow this link to Austin City Limits. Choose two artists that you have not heard before, then watch and listen to their featured songs.Austin City Limits.  Begin your post by mentioning the artists and the songs heard. Please pick someone different than other students. Stretch yourself! First come, first served, but there are many choices (200 – keep scrolling)  Next, one at a time, describe them, and answer the following questions.  What is the performance like?  How do the musicians act?  Does the music impact you?  Does it resemble music you listen to regularly? Why or why not?

12 This Week’s Assignments  Project  This week’s project asks you to consider what songs are important to you and why. You can think of this as defining the soundtrack of your own life. In 750-1000 words, consider and explain the role of music in your life story:  What music do you associate with childhood? How did/does this music make you feel? How do your choices reflect your childhood experiences?  What music do you associate with adolescence? Was this music a way to fit in or rebel?  What music do you associate with comfort? How do these songs help you deal with disappointment or stress?  What music do you associate with happiness? Why?  Project Rubric: Unit 4, pp.10-11 of syllabus: Concrete examples
