1. The 1960’s

2.  Although Rock and Roll was wildly successful and popular it had its downfalls. ▪ Many of the record producers felt too many DJ’s and independent labels controlled the market and wanted that to change. ▪ The youth of yesterday were growing up and their taste in music had as well.

3.  The youth that created the youth culture movement were now growing up and their taste in music has changed. The music they use to listen to was considered the music of their little siblings.  Now instead of happy non-sexualized music more focused on dancing, they wanted more political, cultural, and economic based themes in their music.

4.  Even though the youth of the first wave of Rock and Roll were growing up their siblings weren’t. The years from 1957-1963 saw in increase in the “good boy” artists gaining popularity. ▪ Elvis returned from the war with a cleaner more wholesome image…this made parents ok with their children listening to his new music.

5.  Elvis wasn’t the only wholesome image out there… ▪ Frankie Avalon- Dede Dinah and VenusDede Dinah Venus ▪ Bobby Rydell- Wild OneWild One ▪ Neil Sedanka- Breaking up is hard to doBreaking up is hard to do ▪ Paul Anka- DianaDiana  These songs would also be knows as “ Bubblegum Music”

6.  American Band Stand was sky rocketing in popularity, one particular song and dance helped this out.  The youth had a habit of heading straight home after school and turning on the show to see who was the latest artist(s) to perform their songs. They would also learn some new dance moves.

7.  The first major song to take off was The Twist and due to its success then it is still popular today. ▪ Chubby Checker- The TwistThe Twist  So the twist dance was created from this, but other popular moves to come from this era are: the mashed potato, the fly, the fish. ▪ Chubby Checker also had “ Let’s Twist Again”Let’s Twist Again

8.  Although the teens had their bubblegum music, college-age adults wanted more deep music.  So more folksy groups and artists emerged such as: The Weavers ▪ Good Night Irene Good Night Irene ▪ So Long So Long ▪ On Top of Ole Smokey On Top of Ole Smokey

9.  There were other groups to gain recognition at this time.  The Kingston Trio- Tom Dooley, Where Have all the Flowers GoneTom DooleyWhere Have all the Flowers Gone  This folk sound also made way for an easy listening sound of calypso music (Island Music).
