5 What is a Magnet School? A magnet school is meant to attract students who are serious about their learning and desire to take their overall academic experience to a higher level.

6 Our Mission The Early College Magnet Program at Barren County High School commits to offering an accelerated curriculum that develops future leaders and supports their passion for learning.

7 Magnet Overview School within-a-school Three-year program Early college preparation and acceleration Magnet classes integrated into BCHS instructional space Actively involved in athletics, fine arts, other extracurricular clubs & organizations

8 Student Selection Application process Eligibility (eligible to attend BCHS, current BCHS 9th grader or transfer from outside of Barren District) Academic Criteria –Explore, ACT scores –Honors Level Course(s) taken –GPA (3.25) Course Planning –Minimum of 4 AP courses by graduation –Maintain a 3.25 GPA –Dual Enrollment classes –Selection of courses based upon career interest Teacher Recommendations Mirrors Governor’s Scholars application

9 Student Contract Students must take a minimum of 4 Advanced Placement courses (dual credit is also highly encouraged) Students must make 3.25 to maintain “good standing” Two or more D’s or one F as final course grades= dismissal Academic Probation (maximum one time) Conference with student and/or parent to develop remedial plan –If successful, “good standing” returned –If not, student dismissed from program See contract for info regarding unexcused absences and discipline

28 BC Magnet by the Numbers 26 Minimum number of hours of college credit BC Magnet students can earn by passing the 4 required AP classes’ exams along with 4 optional dual credit classes (2 Labs included in this number) Record: a student had 68 and earned early acceptance to medical school in 2013 Last year a BCHS senior had 55 hours before senior AP exams.

29 Service Requirements There are no additional service requirements for magnet at BCHS.
