World Peace Perhaps the first multi-nation attempt at world peace came in 1814-1815, when the greatest powers of Europe put aside their own selfish ambitions after the disasters of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. The Congress of Vienna reorganized Europe so as to keep the continent’s greatest powers secure from future upheavals. Europe enjoyed relative peace for nearly a century before spiraling into the depths of World War I. (socialstudies.com)

The League of Nations The trauma of the Great War proved the impetus of the League of Nations, the first modern-day attempt at an international organization to ensure peace. Though the League of Nations ultimately was a failed experiment in international cooperation, it provided the inspiration for the United Nations, an organization that, for all its faults has endured for decades. The League was successful in addressing problems- health, global finance, boundary disputes, arms control, intellectual cooperation, and refugees.

The United Nations Officially created in 1945, this new body- the United Nations- would be dedicated to the principles of self-determination, democracy, cooperation, and free trade. All sovereign states would be invited to join.

Preamble The Preamble is the opening of the United Nations Charter. Was signed on June 26, 1945, in San Francisco at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and come into force on October 24, 1945. Universal Declaration of Human Rights On December 10, 1948, the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, proclaiming it as a ‘common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.’ It arose from the experience of World War II and represents the collective expression of what people believe to be the rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled. So what does the United Nations do? It maintains international peace and security by making resolutions to make policy for the world. We will know the details and format of resolutions in another lesson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoIafzc0k74
