Mirembe hospital background 7 Estimated area of 150 acres Located in Dodoma region- a capital city of the United Republic of Tanzania About 2 Km from Dodoma town center In 1925 the British colonial government began the construction of Mirembe The hospital was opened in the year 1926 having 50 mental patients from Lutindi Hospital

Mirembe hospital background 8 In 1950 a hospital for criminal mental patients was opened in Dodoma and named Broad moor – after a forensic psychiatric hospital in Britain with the same function The Broad moor first started off with 60 patients under the Ministry of Home Affairs In 1960, a Parliamentary Act transferred Broad moor hospital to the Ministry of Health and renamed it Isanga Institution under the leadership of Mirembe Medical Superintendent

Mirembe hospital background 9 In the 1980’s mental health services were integrated into Primary Health Care 2010, the reformation of health system services, renamed the hospital as Mirembe Mental Health Hospital and Isanga Correction Center

Mirembe hospital background The Mirembe complex comprises of Mirembe Civil Mental Hospital Isanga Correction Centre Mirembe Annex Itega Drug Dependence Treatment Centre Hombolo Rehabilitation Village Mirembe School of Nursing 10

Mirembe hospital background 11 Currently, Mirembe Hospital offers services for clients with mental health and disorders, substance misuse and physical illnesses to about 650 inpatients and 250 outpatients daily

Vision 12 Sustainable mental health services at Mirembe are provided by qualified staff in every aspect without any form of discrimination
