1
Cancer cells grow and divide out of control Ch. 9.4
2
The timing of cell division is very important If the timing control ‘system’ has an error, cell division goes out of control.
3
Tumors and Cancer When cells divide and produce a mass, forms a TUMOR Non-cancerous, normal cells are BENIGN (that’s a GOOD THING!!!) Sometimes they can cause a minor health issue, but it’s easily fixed by surgery.
4
Cells that divide out of control and move throughout the body are a BAD THING!!! Form MALIGNANT TUMORS cancer cells CANCER disease caused by the severe disruption of the mechanisms that normally control the cell cycle
5
Cancer cells can easily spread throughout the body Overtakes the normal body cells When cancer cells spread from origin, called METASTATIS
7
Cancer Treatment If possible, malignant tumors can be removed by surgery It’s difficult to remove ALL cancer cells though Undergo therapy radiation therapy (high frequency radiation) or chemotherapy (drugs)
8
Concept Check List 2 differences between benign tumors and malignant tumors. How might drugs that interfere with mitosis be effective in treating cancer? How is cancer related to cell reproduction?
