2 Brezhnev Bio: ●Born on December 19, 1906 ●Died November 10, 1982 ●Before Brezhnev became a full member of the Communist Party(1931) he had been a land surveyor(1920s) ●During WW2 served in Red Army, here he became a Major General(1943) ●When Stalin had died he lost his position and was demoted to deputy ●1976 Brezhnev made marshal of the Soviet Union, thus being the only party leader after Stalin to hold the highest power ●Lead the Soviet Union for 18 years

3 Cause leading to war Taraki Regime in place in Afghan Leaders launch a jihad against communism Brezhnev Doctrine established In 1979 Afghan spiraled into Civil War

4 Why Afghan got into a Civil War (pro-soviet) Nur Mohammad Taraki gov. took power in a coup(1978) Started making a series of radical modernizations Suppressing any possible options from traditional Muslim Afghans Gov. executed about 27,000 prisoners By April 1979 half the country was in rebellion and by December the gov. lost all control

5 Afghan War ●1979-Soviet Army invaded and supports Communist government ●1980-Barbrak Karmal placed as ruler, supported by Soviet troops ●1985-Mujahideen(supported by US, Pakistan, China, Iran and Saudi Arabia) comes together to form alliance against Soviet Union ●1986-US supplies Mujahideen with stinger missiles ●1988-Afghan, USSR, US and Pakistan sign a peace treaty ●1989-Last Soviet troops leave

6 Foreign Aid US, UK, Saudi Arabia, PRC(China)-supports Afghan US and UK supplied aircraft missiles, and ground rockets to Mujahideen

7 Results Short Term 1 million Afghan died 5 million Afghans fled to neighboring countries Afghan destabilized 14,000 Soviet soldiers killed Soviets lost 1000 pieces of equipment and 450 aircrafts Soviet casualties-50,000 ● Long Term ○ costed Soviets billions of dollars of debut ○ contributed to the failure of the Soviet Union ○ Afghan is brought to a state of civil unrest
