The Complexity of Word Knowledge Aaliah Alhissan May-13-15
2
The Complexity of word knowledge: It discusses the complexity of word knowledge. Any attempt to understand the processes by which children’s vocabulary grow must be based on recognition of the complexity of word knowledge. Five aspects of the complexity that have long been recognized by vocabulary researchers are: 1-incrementality, 2- multidimensionality, 3-Polysemy, 4- interrelatedness, and 5-heterogeneity.
3
incrementality: An incremental view of words learning helps explain how a great deal of vocabulary knowledge can be gained incidentally from context, even when individual encounters with words in context are not particularly informative. Polysemy: Words often have more than one meaning, and the more frequent a word is in the language, the more meaning it is likely to have. Multidimensionality: Discussion of the incremental nature of word learning sometimes appear to assume that word knowledge can be expressed in terms of a single dimension.
4
Interrelatedness: words are often taught and tested as if they were essentially isolated units of knowledge. Heterogeneity: The fact that the different dimension of word knowledge are at least partially independent of each other also means that the same word can require different types of learning from different types of students, depending on what they already know about a word.

●The five aspects describe the complexity of word knowledge in children. ●If we apply these aspects we can solve and overcome many difficulties in teaching vocabularies to children and help them to gain many words. ●Children should understand these words and know how and when to use them. ●All of these aspects and their advantages can provide great help to children to build their reading and writing skills.
6
●Teaching children new words with multiple meaning is critical and should be done carefully to avoid confusing them. ●A great impact on children’s literacy.
7
●I agree with the authors on how children’s vocabularies grow and the complexity of word knowledge. ●Vocabularies limitations. ●Produce and design new teaching styles. ●We need to evaluate children’s word knowledge from different perspectives. ●By following the aspects that the authors suggest, we can build and design a teaching technique helps students to get more vocabularies and learn their meanings. ● learning different vocabularies in early ages can have an impact on all children’s skills and can enhance their overall learning.
8
●The authors assume that children need several steps to learn on vocabulary where he referred to it as incremental. ●Children usually have incomplete initial understanding. ●We should not assume children picked the right meaning usually, however, we need to evaluate them frequently to make sure they pick the right meaning. ●One important aspect here is that some great poets became great because they had a wide range of vocabularies and they know how to use them. ●Gained many vocabularies during their childhood.
