Lesson 3: Format Data and Content Excel 2007 provides many different tools to format the data and overall look of a spreadsheet.

The font is the “look” of the characters. A fontstyle is a trait such as bold, italic, or underline. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content Choose the right font to make your worksheet more readable.

Lesson 3: Format Data and Content To change a font or font style, use the Format group or launch the Format Cells dialog box.

To change font color, use the Format menu or the Formatting toolbar. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content You can also copy a font color from one cell to another without changing any of the data.

Applying a border to a cell or groups of cells, makes information easier and quicker to find. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content Click the Borders button drop-down arrow to apply a border to the edges of a cell or use the Format Cells dialog box A border is a line along one or more edges of a cell.

Lesson 3: Format Data and Content To apply a border around certain cells and not around others, change the settings to copy the text without copying the border. Use the Paste Special dialog box to control which information is pasted into a new cell.

To make many changes to a group of data in one step, use the Convert Text to Columns Wizard. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content The Convert Text to Columns Wizard separates the content of a cell, such as a list of first names and last names, into different columns. Excel makes use of a delimiter, or divider, to separate the text.

To make sure cells cells are consistently formatted, use themes, table styles, and cell styles. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content A theme is a predefined set of colors, fonts, and effects you can apply to an entire workbook.

To apply a table style, or predefined set of formats, to a range of data, use the Format as Table command. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content Themes and table styles save time by making formatting changes, such as adding borders and changing font colors, in one step.

A cell style is a set of formatting traits that has been given a name. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content When you apply a cell style, you apply all of the formatting traits of that style.

Microsoft Office 2007 has several built-in cell styles, called Quick Styles. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content Quick Styles allow you to change the look of a group of data— such as applying currency or percentages—in one quick step.

Excel 2007 offers several ways to change the size of rows and columns. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content To change column width, drag the line between the column headings and double-click the line between the column headings to AutoFit them. You can also use the Format menu or Right click the column heading to adjust column width using a specified value.

To change the alignment of a cell’s contents, use the Format Cells dialog box or the buttons in the Alignment group on the Home tab. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content Change the horizontal alignment to align the contents of a cell to the left, center, or right.

To change the vertical alignment of a cell’s contents, use the Format Cells dialog box. Lesson 3: Format Data and Content Change the vertical alignment to position the contents of a cell in relation to the top and bottom of the cell.
