2  Charles Darwin was a British naturalist  Sailed on the HMS Beagle on a trip around the world in 1831

3  Visited the Galapagos Islands  SPECIES: A group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring

4  ADAPTATION – a trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce

5  Individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce  3 Factors:  1.) Overproduction – more offspring than can possibly survive

6  2.) Competition – offspring must compete with each other to survive  3.) Variations – offspring differ in some traits The Peppered Moth

7 Geographic Isolation  A new species can form when a group of individuals remains separated from the rest of its species long enough to evolve different traits.  This often happens on islands such as Madagascar and Australia
