Warm Up Activity: Weight Loss Products Have you ever used a weight loss product? If you have tried a weight loss product, was it effective? If you have not tried one, just answer with “No” Would you recommend people to use weight loss products in general (if you had to choose a yes or no answer)? 3

Unit 8 Project Exercises Go to the MyPyramid Menu Planner. www.mypyramidtracker.gov/planner/launchP age.aspx Enter your personal information and click Submit. Choose the menu planning option for either maintaining your current weight or moving toward a healthier weight. Click on the link to “site tour” and watch the tour.

Unit 8 Project Exercise, cont. Plan a week’s worth of meals. Click on the “reports”tab at the top of the screen. Choose a report from the 5 choices and write a one page paper on your findings (APA format). Include a screenshot of your results and a separate reference page.

Unit 9- Final Project You will create a personal Diet and Nutrition Education Guide as a resource in your diet and nutrition career. The guide is a way to capture important information about Contemporary Diet and Nutrition course content, resources and tools used in the study and practice of nutrition as well as your Personal Assessments related to Diet and Physical Activity. The guide can serve as a handy reference as you continue your nutrition studies or to use in your professional career.

The guide must contain important web sites, books and software. The Appendices must include a copy of your MyPyramid Diet Quality and Physical Activity Status and your summary of the dietary habits of the community you selected.

Instructions: Create your Diet and Nutrition Guide in Microsoft® Word. You may use your own template of the one provided by the Instructor. Please refer to the Instructor’s Example for additional details related to a template that has already been set up in Microsoft® Word. Templates are available in Microsoft® Word 1997-2003 and Windows Vista as well as from the Microsoft® Web site:(book templates); (manuals); (guides).

Requirements: Each chapter in the Diet and Nutrition Education Guide should contain the following information: –A 3-4 sentence description of three (3) key learning points from the unit –A list and short description of three (3) Web sites identified in the Web Resources –A list and short description with one (1) article, essay or book related to the unit topic –A list and short description of one nutrition, physical activity or health-related software program or online tracking system (e.g., MyPyramid). Note: Chapter 16 in our course text book by Schlenker and Long, Williams' Essentials of Nutrition & Diet Therapy, Ninth Edition, page 400, To Probe Further, has information related to selecting computer nutrient-calculation software.

Appendices: Diet and physical activity assessment: Include your Unit 2 Project Exercise of your personal diet and physical activity assessment write- up. Conduct an Internet search on the dietary habits of a community in which you are interested. You can choose from the list below or select your own community. Prepare a 100-150 word summary of the information that you found on their cultural food preferences. You can use a search engine like Google or the Health Sciences Resource Room. Properly cite the website in your write up. –African American –Appalachian –Amish –Hmong –Mexican-American –Middle Eastern –Puerto Rican –Vietnamese

The Media The Surgeon General’s report charged the media with “encouraging truthful and reasonable consumer goals for weight loss programs and weight management products”

FTC Report Report is a joint effort of the FTC and the Partnership for Healthy Weight Management which consists of reps from science, academia, health care, government, & commercial orgs who share the mission of promoting sound guidance on strategies for achieving & maintaining a healthy weight

FTC Act Under the FTC Act the advertising of products and services for weight loss is governed by the same legal standards that apply to all other product & service promotions: 1.The ad must be truthful and not misleading 2.Before disseminating an ad, advertiser must have adequate proof for all objective product claims

Evidence-based Guidelines for Weight Loss Issued by NIH Simultaneously reduce calories and increase physical activity Safe rate is 1-2# loss per week, 10% of body weight in 6 months One pound of fat = 3500 calories Create 500 to 1000 calorie deficit per day

Summary and Q&A False and deceptive advertising puts the public at risk The public should make an effort to educate themselves on safe weight loss and how to recognize scams Public should follow evidence-based weight loss guidelines and not look for the “miracle cure” FTC regulates and enforces the law with the weight loss industry however it cannot keep up with the scams!
