Protozoan Pathogen Can cause gastro-intestinal illnesses The organism most commonly isolated in the HIV positive patients Illness triggers when tiny cryptosporidium parasites enter your body and travel to the small intestines Symptoms include water diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, cramps, fever In April 1993, cryptosporidium was responsible for a major outbreak of illness in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. More than 400,000 became ill after drinking contaminated water from the water supply system.

Infection of the small intestine Caused by protozoa Caused by water contamination and sewage wastes Risk factors: Exposure to a family member with giardiasis Unprotected anal sex Symptoms: Abdominal Pain Gas or Bloating Diarrhea Headache Vomiting

Caused by shigella bacteria Diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps The diarrhea is often bloody Symptoms usually last 5-7 days Can cause deadly epidemics Other symptoms of shigellosis include: loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting In severe cases the person may suffer a seizure, stiff neck, headache, extreme tiredness and confusion. In some severe cases the infected person may become dehydrated.
