International collaboration and Latin America Michael Stanton RNP – Brazilian R&E Network RedCLARA – Latin American Regional R&E Network michael@rnp.br
2
Beyond collaboration through services Elcira has deployed a service platform for RedCLARA, to assist communication and collaboration. Interest here is to deal with other less formalised forms of international collaboration, originating from the RNP user community or opportunities –Scientific –Network development and testbeds –Cultural and medical
3
Scientific collaboration A principal user-oriented motive for REN creation: –RNP 1989, RedCLARA 2003 “Big” experimental/observational science continues to be a major driver for RENs – demands come from users and relate to RNP and RedCLARA growth –High-energy physics: LHC, Auger (cosmic ray observatory in AR), … –Astronomy (Chile): SOAR, GEMINI, DES, LSST (starting) –Remote electron microscopy at IMC2010 in Rio Positive feedback for higher bandwidth and international connections and new network collaborations such as GLIF (since 2008-2009)
4
Network development and testbeds RNP, accompanied by the Brazilian research community, is a participant in collaborative developments –Network performance monitoring (perfSONAR) –Dynamic circuits and BoD (GLIF, US and EU) –Future Internet testbeds (US and EU) –Videoconferencing software 2 presentations and 1 poster at TNC2014
5
Cultural and medical collaborations Most of these based on A/V capacities, some developed through RNP & universities Cyberperformances with APAN –Since 2012 Dance School at UFBA (Salvador) collaborates with European and Asian partners in live performances at APAN conferences(Thailand, Korea) CineGrid participation since 2009 –Recent live transmission of medical surgeries (4K video) SHV (8K video) transmission to/from Japan –Following JANET’s example in 2012 London Olympics, RNP is working with NHK and NTT to provide live 8K coverage of 2014 World Cup and 2016 Rio Olympics
6
About this experience Untapped demand for greater int’l collaborations –Catalytic availability of abundant international bandwidth –User demand often not identified due to lack of familiarity with very real possibilities and opportunities –Campus network can slow things down … “Science DMZ” (Esnet) is a great help here Need for more showcasing and dissemination
