Plot: The author recounts the childhood of little Elena in the U.S. and their experience with first love.
Characters: Elena, Eugene.
Setting: Paterson, New Jersey “El building”.
Conflict: The conflict in the story is that Elena is between her dreams and hopes and the brute reality that she has to face because of her ethnicity.

Theme: The Theme is confronting racism as a young Puerto Rican girl.
Author’s Purpose: The author teaches us about the racism that Elena have to go through in school.
Main Idea: The main idea concerns the nature of prejudice and discrimination and how the experience of America is a nation parallels the experience of Elena herself.

Fact: The death of President Kennedy.
Opinion: It seems that Elena and Eugene were never able to continue their relationship.
Cause: The black girls gave Elena the nickname of skinny bones.
Effect: Elena is shy and scared of going to school.
Sequence of events: In the story Elena finds a boy she likes and he ask her to come over to study but her parents don’t approve of her going over he’s house.
