 Children learn in multiple settings. A child does not need to be sitting in a traditional brick and mortar school to gain access to knowledge. Most of a child’s learning experiences often happen outside of the classroom at a community center, a museum, sports centers, and through structured groups and activities, such as homework clubs and community service. Providing more learning experience outside of school will offset learning disparities that were not gained in school. Environmental Achievement Gap: Out of School Learning Experience

Organizations involved in out of school programs:  Libraries  Parks departments  YMCAs  Schools  Other private program providers

 61% of children enrolled in out of school programs attend a school or center based program in a public school  2005, 40% of K-8 students attended an out of school program at least once a week Statistics

Out of School Learning Cook (2015) cites Moving Beyond, 2004 in stating that “ Students who regularly attend Out of school time programs seem to enjoy school more, have more positive attitudes to learning, and better in-school behavior according to their teachers” (p. 2).

Physical Activates  Many children who are enrolled in out of school programs are enrolled on a sports team or club.  Provides a safe and supervised environment  Extra physical activity

 “ Students from low socioeconomic status homes, on average, have less rich, less academically focused summer experiences than their more advantaged peers” (Murphy, 2010, p. 143).  Having students attend a summer program will help keep their brains in a constant state of learning. Summer programs

 Out of school programs are a wonderful way to help extend learning opportunities for middle and low income families. There have been a number of reports that have linked the achievement gap with the benefits of out of school programs in closing the achievement gap. These programs provide a safe haven for children of all ages as well as social status. Out of school programs provide children with enrichment programs that may not otherwise be provided Conclusion
