Developmental math … Here’s a real-life application of mathematics… A student enrolls in Math 0304 in Fall 2008. What is his or her chance of success? 42% A student enrolls in Math 0305 in Spring 2009. Again, what is his or her chance of success in that course? 39% Not really … what if that is the original student then we must consider the cumulative chance of success? 42% x 39% = 16.4% A student enrolls in Math 0306 in Fall 2009. You know the drill… 44% … Not really … starting from the beginning … 42% x 39% x 44% = 7.2% That is 7.2% of the students who started in Math 0304 will successfully complete their developmental math sequence in three semesters. Out of a class of 25, that is 1.8 students.
