POIWG#30 E-USOC Operations in Increment 29-30 José Miguel Ezquerro Navarro E-USOC/UPM 26-28 July, 2011 1 POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL

E-USOC is located in Madrid, Spain, and is responsible for the operations of: – Increment 29: SODI COLLOID-2 – Increment 30&31: EPO FOAM-S – Increment 27-29: GeoFlow-2 E-USOC 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 2

SODI COLLOID-2  Study of growth and properties of advanced photonic materials in microgravity – Samples probed with NFS technique (Near Field Scattering): formation of aggregates and growing structures by a quantitative check of the power spectra of the scattered radiation. 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 3  Extension based on SODI COLLOID scientific analysis: – Aging effect: deviations that follows a trend observed. Direct influence on the interaction between colloids – Crystal not observed: temperature steps (∆T) were too large to allow for crystals to form – Above critical point (originally part of COLLOID)

SODI COLLOID-2 : on-orbit operations  HW uploaded in 39P (inc.24)  Experiment performance in MSG – MSG calendar: ops start in mid october 2011  Crew required for HW installation & de- installation and power on/off MSG rack – SODI de-installation not needed if SODI COLLOID and SODI DSC are performed back to back  Overall nominal duration (runs+dnlk+crew) : – 2 weeks + 2days 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 4

SODI COLLOID-2 : on-orbit operations  4 experiment cells, 1 reference cell – 54 runs (2 ref + 52 scientific) – ~ total of 90 GB generated (images & science data)  Data storage: 1 flash disk of 128 GB  Downlink required via MLC (images & science data) : – ~ 10 GB total / ~ 900 MB per day  1 flash disk (0.51 kg) with scientific data to be downloaded in SpX-1 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 5

SODI COLLOID-2 : Ops concept  Ground commanding required for – Experiment execution » Start experiment » Update scientific parameters » Stop/resume experiment – downlink/uplink files » file transfer from SODI to MLC/from MLC to SODI  Autonomous experiment operations (scripts) monitored from ground in a 24/5 scenario 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 6 ShiftsE-USOCTPZPOIC MonitoringAAB CommandingA-B (off-nominal) ShiftsStart (GMT)End (GMT) A04:0020:00 B 04:00

SODI COLLOID-2 : Ops concept  Commanding from POIC cadre / MSG Ops – SODI power on/off – File uplink (scripts + configuration files) – File downlink (images & science data) » ~ twice a day, for scientists to analyse and assess parameters for following runs » Distribution to E-USOC via PIMS/FTP – In off-nominal cases, and E-USOC not on console, some SODI-COLLOID commands are delegated and documented in P/L Regulations and GCPs 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 7

SODI COLLOID-2 : Infraestructure 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 8

SODI COLLOID-2 : Readiness  Planning inputs provided to POIC for URC – Timeline, crew time, resources (downlink/uplink, power)  Applicable from SODI COLLOID-1 – P/L regulation » (ref. POIF-1012-ANX1/ULF7 baseline) – GCP – PODF: Ground procedures  New developments – Crew procedures (minor updates – e.g. MSG in US lab) – Scripts » Pending real time validations (new parameters) 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 9

EPO FOAM-S 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 10  Study of dry and wet foams in a microgravity environment  Educational activities aim at introducing the concept of foams to European children age 10-18. Foams behavior differences between gravity and microgravity environments Foam Stability Cell Array (x3)

EPO FOAM-S: on-orbit operations  HW upload in 45P (Inc.29)  A. Kuipers flight in 29S (Inc.30)  All activities to be performed by A. Kuipers in COLUMBUS : – Inc. 30 » Science activities: HW installation and deinstallation, recording of scientific runs using G1 Camcorder in Columbus » Educational activities for livelink preparation: experiment initiation and initial comments and livelink backup message recorded using a second G1 Camcorder in Columbus – Inc. 31 » Livelink  Second crew required for supporting the livelink and if time available the educational activities 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 11

EPO FOAM-S: on-orbit operations  3 cell arrays, 12 cells per array – Minimum requirement: » 1 run per cell/15 min run – Nice to have requirement: » 3 runs per cell/30 min run  Data storage on-orbit: – 1-5 miniDV tapes depending on the runs performed – 2 miniDV tapes for the educational videos 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 12

EPO FOAM-S: Ops concept  Downlink required for all the data generated – Real time video for the livelink, » Also required for the rest of educational activities if a second crew member is not available – MPC downlink (distribution via DIMS exchange to E- USOC) – Photos (distribution via DIMS to E-USOC)  No mass to be downloaded  No ground commanding required from E-USOC  Generic ISS voice resources will be used to support crew activities 26-28 July, 2011POIWG #30, Hunstville, AL 13
